Meet Our Volunteer/ Interns

We greatly appreciate and welcome volunteers/Interns, both from Kenya and abroad.We charge $75 per month as volunteer fee, please note that we have outsourced cheap accommodation Through Lihanda Investment Services,which is inclusive of visits to Nairobi National park and lake Nakuru.We only accept volunteers/Interns who go through Lihanda Investment Services to avoid inconvenience from private arrangement which inconvenience both Riverbank and volunteer Volunteers / Interns position include

Preferred experience / knowledge:

  • Coursework in microfinance, finance, economics, international development, entrepreneurship
  • Experience living or working in a developing nation(s)
  • Experience working or interning with an MFI
  • Knowledge (or willingness to gain knowledge) of Kenya: cultural, political, economic, and social strengths and weaknesses

Possible areas of focus for your internship include, but are not limited to:

  • microfinance policy and operations - researching what new or innovative microfinance methods could help Riverbank lift more clients out of poverty, reporting on what Riverbank can do to conquer weaknesses and build on strengths

  • marketing and communications - promoting Riverbank both locally to potential loan recipients and internationally to potential investors (which require two very different strategies) and developing strong webmarketing strategies

  • staff training - creating programs and manuals to guide the field officers who give out the loans and collect interest from the individual small business people

  • accounting and finance - using experience, new methods and new perspectives to make our processes more efficient

  • development of health and wellness programs for clients of Riverbank - including programs for child health, nutrition, and HIV/AIDS awareness

  • development of basic curriculum for banking and bookkeeping lessons - designing short lessons to inform small business women and men of the concepts and terms of banking and bookkeeping so that they can be successful in understanding and repaying their loans

  • fundraising techniques - finding ways to raise funds for specific areas such as updating technology and equipment in our office and building new branches in different areas of Kenya, and writing proposals

  • policy documentation - adapting our current in-use policies to written format to create a clear documentation of our policies for our own use and the use of others

  • human resources - finding ways to recruit, retain and motivate the employees who are the heart of the organization

  • product development - exploring new and creative product ideas based on market demand and feasibility and updating current products to best serve clients

  • field reporters - visiting our clients and their small businesses to collect and add their stories and photos to our website, and create a useful system to evaluate how and why the loan worked against poverty on the individual level

  • development of an online marketplace for the poor business women and men that we serve to market their goods and crafts (woodworks, jewelry, etc) to a much wider network

  • independent research - on any topic, such as community impact, policy assessment, client data, with feedback to Riverbank on how to improve our operations based on results of the research.
